From Hardship to Handcraft: The Story Behind LadyMaillerie Designs

There's something almost meditative about the click of metal rings linking together — one by one, row by row — until something beautiful emerges. For me, that rhythm has been a lifeline.

I'm Samantha, the maker behind LadyMaillerie Designs. I'm an Air Force disabled veteran, a work-from-home mom, and for the past 15+ years, I've been weaving chainmaille jewelry by hand. But this business didn't start as a plan. It started as a way to heal.

The Craft That Carried Me

Chainmaille is an ancient art — the same interlocking ring technique used to craft medieval armor — and there's something deeply grounding about working with your hands in a tradition that spans centuries. When life got hard, I turned to the rings. When I needed focus, I turned to the rings. When I needed to create something beautiful in a world that felt uncertain, I turned to the rings.

Every piece I make is built entirely by hand, one ring at a time. No molds. No machines. Just patience, precision, and a whole lot of love.

What "Veteran-Owned" Really Means Here

Serving in the Air Force shaped how I approach everything — including my craft. Attention to detail. Commitment to quality. Showing up even when it's hard. Those values are woven into every bracelet, necklace, and earring that leaves my studio.

Being a veteran-owned, handmade jewelry business means you're not just buying a piece of jewelry. You're supporting a small business built on resilience, and you're wearing something made with genuine care.

The Process: How Chainmaille Comes to Life

Here's a peek behind the scenes at how your jewelry is made:

  1. Ring selection — I start by choosing the right gauge and diameter of metal rings for the weave pattern. Different patterns call for different ring sizes — and yes, it matters down to the millimeter.
  2. Weaving — Using two pairs of pliers, I open, link, and close each ring by hand. A single bracelet can contain hundreds of individual rings.
  3. Pattern building — Whether it's a classic Byzantine weave, a bold Box Chain, or a delicate Japanese 12-in-2, each pattern has its own rhythm and challenge.
  4. Finishing — Clasps are added, edges are checked, and every piece is inspected before it's packaged with care.

The result? Jewelry that's built to last — and made to be felt.

Joy Is the Point

I started LadyMaillerie Designs because I needed something to hold onto. Now, I make jewelry so you have something beautiful to hold onto too.

Whether it's a colorful chainmaille bracelet that makes you smile every time you glance at your wrist, a dragon scale necklace that speaks to your inner fantasy lover, or a fidget keychain that keeps your hands busy in the best way — every piece is made to bring a little more joy into your day.

That's not just a tagline. It's the whole reason I do this.
